In Android Auto, NUNAV currently does not display the current speed and speed limits. This is due, among other things, to the fixed UI templates and guidelines of Android Auto as well as our current implementation. While Android Auto is active, the operation/display of the app is greatly reduced on the smartphone. Navigation, estimated time of arrival, and traffic-avoiding detours continue to function as usual.
What's behind it?
Android-for-Cars App Library & Templates: Android Auto enforces predefined design templates for navigation apps (e.g., Navigation Template). This prevents distraction but limits free overlays. Developers must adhere to these UX guidelines.
UX/Distraction Rules: Strict Car UX Restrictions (Driver Distraction Rules) apply. Not every arbitrary content can be displayed at any time.
Projection Mode: When Android Auto is running, the smartphone UI is deliberately restricted/dimmed, and interaction primarily takes place on the vehicle display.
What works – and what (still) doesn't?
✅ Works: Route guidance, ETA, traffic-avoiding routes, voice announcements, lane change hints (if available).
🚫 Not yet in AA: Display of “current speed” and “speed limit” within the NUNAV view.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
“I see speed & limit on the phone – why not in the car?”
On the smartphone, we can render our own UI. In Android Auto, we must use the car templates and adhere to their rules. Currently, the display is not activated there.
“Can I enable this somewhere?”
Currently, no. There is currently no manual option in Android Auto.
“Is the feature coming?”
We are evaluating the clean integration within Google's guidelines. We will only announce a date once everything is stable through tests & reviews.
“Why can't I just look at the phone?”
While Android Auto is projected, the app display on the smartphone is intentionally limited (distraction avoidance).
Workarounds
Use without Android Auto: NUNAV directly on the smartphone (mount) – speed & speed limit are displayed there.
Use vehicle functions: Vehicle's speedometer/traffic sign recognition (if available).
Good to know
The car app guidelines and templates are evolving. We will adapt NUNAV as soon as new possibilities are stable and compliant with the rules.
